Proper disposal of domestic garbage.

We never realize how simple practices at home can go a long way in securing a clean and green environment for us. Proper disposal of domestic garbage with segregation of recyclable waste is one such practice which if put into practice in our daily life can really work wonders.

All we need to do is the following :

Collect plastics and other recyclable waste separately (plastic bags, wrappers, empty milk packets, Paper waste etc.) and either pass them to recycling units or give them to garbage collectors. Now a days we get everything wrapped in plastic wrappers right from fruits and vegetables to dal and rice.. so its a good habit to collect these wrappers separately after using the contents. And once in a week these wrappers and other waste collected over the period can be passed on to the garbage collectors. They would send the plastic waste to the appropriate recycling agency.

So, all you need is two dustbins instead of one. One for your usual day to day waste and the other for the recyclable waste. Following this practice you would also get to know how much of plastic you use and you can try to reduce the usage of plastics. Here are some tips to do so.

Such simple domestic practices if practiced can take us a long way in reducing the use of plastics and stopping them from being disposed untreated. Most of the plastic not disposed properly end up either blocking drains or littering the roads. If properly disposed the waste plastic can be put to some good use.

Where do I plant trees ?

I have met many people who would like to contribute and help towards planting of trees. But the main problem with living in a city is that there is hardly any space available to plant trees. Even I have been over the past few weeks trying to find ways of contributing towards planting trees and doing my bit in saving the green cover. In that quest I googled a lot and finally was able to reach trees for free, an organization which plants trees and helps maintain a green cover for our beautiful city.

They also maintain a blog, and it felt really good to see them doing a nice job. I would certainly join them and volunteer for some activities while also contribute atleast rupees 100 monthly towards the fund that they maintain to plant trees.

Moreover, there is also a scarcity of space in the city to plant trees. So, It would be good if people take the cause seriously and allow the planting of trees near their homes.

Lets hope we can give our city a good green cover and make it clean and green !!

Waste to fuel

Projects trying to convert waste to fuel are not new. But most of them either are not commercially viable or depend on a lot of pre-processing to convert the available waste to fuel.

I would like to mention two projects in India which have been able to cross the above hurdles and are getting rave reviews all over and can develop to be the technology the world will take notice of.

A Nagpur based couple (Alka Zadgaonkar and her husband Umesh Zadgaonkar) have set up a plant to convert plastic waste to fuel. The plant has been setup on the basis of the research taken up by Alka and the best part is that the fuel produced can also be used for use in vehicles (Now thats a very very good news). Although the fuel has been used to drive vehicles and has been found to be good enough to do that. As of now they are only supplying the fuel for use in Boilers and is it a surprise that all the fuel that they would produce for the coming years has already been sold out.

Another organization Sustainable Technologies and Environmental Projects based in Mumbai has also developed a technology for converting waste to fuel and has been getting global attention.

Now that is what I call clean and green technology. I am thrilled at this double delight, first that such wonderful technologies are coming around to save us from the mounds of plastic waste all around us and secondly that these technologies are being developed in India. We can become the pioneers in clean and green technologies and show the world a path to green living.

Kudos to the Zadgaonkar's and STEPS !!

Plastic not a waste anymore !!

Hats-off to Rasool Khan and Ahmed Khan of KK plastic waste management a company in Bangalore which has developed a way to use plastic waste to strengthen the roads.
And this is not merely an experiment any more. They have already paved roads using bitumen mixed with plastic waste and the results have been very encouraging. The strength of roads is much better and they are lasting more. This is good news not only because we can safely dispose off the plastic waste which would otherwise end up choking drains, people also get good roads.

So, whats the delay all you people in Bangalore need to do is to segregate your plastic waste and make sure you sell/dispose it off to KK Plastics and Waste Management who can then use it to improve yours roads. Isn't that exiting.

I will try and post places where you can sell/give off your plastic waste for proper disposal/recycling.

Green Tips.

Some tips, using which you can contribute towards having a clean and green environment.
  1. Carry your own shopping bag (you would have many of them lying at home) every time you go to buy something. Try to do away with the use of plastics, specially plastic bags.
  2. Replace all usual light bulbs with CFL, they are a bit expensive initially but have a long life and use much less electricity. So don't worry about the high price it will even out soon with lower electricity bills.
  3. Use a bicycle or walk for small errands near home instead of using car or motor vehicles. Will also improve fitness.
  4. Use recycled paper.
  5. Buy grocery with less packing, lot of paper/plastic is wasted in packing vegetables and fruits.
  6. When you think of buying a car, try to buy a hybrid car (which would run on alternative fuels as well).
  7. Implement rain water harvesting at your homes. Will help in recharging ground water and increase the water table.
  8. Use solar water heaters at home. They are very good and will also keep your electricity bills low.
  9. If you use a car, make sure it is properly serviced at regular intervals. This will reduce carbon emissions from your car.
  10. Use public transport as much as possible. Its cheaper as well.
  11. Opt for electronic statements for your bank accounts, phone bills etc.
  12. Do not print useless material at office. Print both sides of paper.
These are simple things which would not need much efforts. I would not want you to start following all of them at the same time. But yes if majority of people can follow majority of these points we would be much better off !
